Disgraceful Criminal Act

Kristi Setterington

There are moments where you stop and shake your head. A crime earlier this week is one of those times.

A 24-year-old male has been arrested for robbery following his attempt to rob an 88-year-old woman.

High praise goes to the Oxford Community Police Service for tracking down the suspect and quickly making an arrest. Praise also goes to the staff at Zellers who gave chase.

This was no simple robbery. The male approached the elderly woman and attempted to steal her purse out of her walker basket.

The victim, and keep in mind, she’s 88 years old, tried to stop the theft and struggled with the thief. She lost her balance and fell to the floor, resulting in injuries to her hip and head.

What a disgrace. Taking down a little old lady for a quick buck. You must be so proud.

A 21-year-old female was also charged with possession of property obtained by crime and breach of probation. The female had been found attempting to sell the victim’s stolen credit cards.

We can only hope these two will find themselves in front of a touch on crime judge. It’s time we make examples of criminals who feel it is OK to take advantage of our elderly.

Last Friday marked World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Crimes such as this are just another example of how the elderly are taken advantage of.

While anyone will tell you when presented with a similar situation it’s best to just give the item up, a big round of applause has to be given to the 88-year-old who refused to be a victim and fought back.
